I can tell you the moment I first considered myself a copywriter. It was a dark Monday morning in January and I was checking my bank statement. And there it was – my first payment for a piece of copywriting work. It was like putting in the final piece of the puzzle, I’d gone through the whole journey. Pitch, discovery call, creating, revising, seeing my work go live and then getting paid. Of course, this isn’t the whole journey at all, it was just the start. My next watershed moment came when, just two months after starting the course, I had paid for it with copywriting work alone. Oh and that two months included Christmas!
So how was this possible and what was the course, you may be asking. I came across Filthy Rich Writer when I was at a crossroads in my freelance career. I wasn’t getting the income I wanted (or needed) editing and, having always enjoyed writing, I felt that copywriting was a good option to branch out into.
I didn’t enrol straight away, it’s not easy to be at a low point income wise to pay out more money. After much soul searching, I decided to go for it and join the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy. I’m so glad I did. This course is written and led by Nicki Krawczyk, herself a successful copywriter and the owner of Filthy Rich Writer. As Nicki says, learn from those who are successful and don’t listen to those who have either never tried or given up. What I liked most is that during the course Nicki not only tells you how to write copy she also tells you how to build a copywriting business.
The downside of this is that it can all feel quite overwhelming to start with as there is so much to learn. With everything self-paced, it is possible to take it one step at a time in a way that suits you. The course is aptly called comprehensive with a core set of modules, different bonuses and lots of involvement from Nicki, her right-hand woman Kate and a team of coaches.
The Facebook group is without doubt the best group I have been in – it is supportive, encouraging and honest. It is a lively group and this is in no small part due to the involvement of Kate and the coaches. Nicki’s presence is also tangible as she presents regular Facebook live sessions, coaching calls and occasional month-long challenges. January’s Pitch-a-Palooza giving the detailed ins and outs of pitching is just one example. Challenges and prizes really encourage involvement and show how much Nicki and Kate care and believe in what they are teaching.
If you are on my website, you are likely from the UK as I am. Nicki and the course is US based and this did concern me at first – would I fit in, what about cultural differences? Well, the truth is the course is multinational and that is absolutely to its benefit. My first post in the Facebook group to say ‘Hi, I’m from the UK’, had, within minutes, a surprising number of comments saying ‘Hi, I’m from the UK too’. There’s a healthy Aussie contingent too and it’s really great to hear thoughts and feedback from across the globe.
One thing I wasn't expecting was the guidance on motivation, resistance and how the brain works. I have coaching experience so am fairly well versed on what motivates us and how easily we can be distracted or driven off course. However, this part of the training was invaluable. In many ways none of it was new, but it was put in such a way that it was recognisable when going through the modules and starting out. This helped enormously to overcome the tough periods and keep going. I'm sure it will continue to be invaluable too!
If you enjoy writing and are looking for a different outlet then why not try Filthy Rich Writer – you’ll join a fabulous group of people, learn more than you thought possible, have lots of fun and give yourself the potential to have a satisfying career.
